You OEM radio works with CANBUS to determine when it can turn on/should turn off. Looks like I've answered my own question. On a side note amazon USA will now ship to Canada! Guess they changed their policy and aren't sticking us with the inferior. I guess really it just is a little easier but by no means necessary. Another handy feature! EDIT: Is it? Am I looking at it sideways? I noticed later that the one on Amazon actually is missing the K-line connection. Thanks for the tip about the K-line issue where aftermarket radios can mess with your obd port and therefore youre scan tool! Found an interesting article about it. Looks like soldering or some other connection of bare wires is still necessary. The idea is just that the harness will fit directly onto the oem wire harness so that you don't have to cut up your oem harness and you can connect all the necessary wires together outside of the dash more conveniently. I don't think it is different than yours. I haven't pulled the stock stereo out yet so I can't say what it looks like yet.
